Conselleria d’Educació develops a teacher training course to increase the presence of women scientists in the classroom

Conselleria d’Educació, Cultura i Esport is developing a teacher training course entitled ‘A science with scientists for the classroom’ through the CEFIRE specifically dedicated to the scientific, technological and mathematical fields. The proposal is part of the European project Erasmus + KA201 Women’s Legacy, which Conselleria itself leads and which is coordinated by the researcher Ana López-Navajas.

‘A science with women scientists for the classroom’ consists of a 30-hour pilot course that is taught online and is aimed at secondary education teachers. For its design, which has been worked on for almost a year, professionals from all STEM subjects have collaborated: mathematics, biology and geology, physics and chemistry, technology and computer science.

Launched on the March 23rd, around one hundred teachers from Valencian schools are taking part in this first edition: “The aim is not only to raise awareness of science but above all to transform and broaden the concept of science, as well as to offer tools to include it in teaching practice. This practical approach is what will bring about real change in the classroom”, explains Ana López-Navajas.

Now, the European Women’s Legacy project team will focus on improving the course based on this first experience and on adapting it to more educational levels, such as university teachers of secondary school master’s degrees. In addition, the intention is for it to be taught in other autonomous regions and countries such as Italy, Lithuania and Scotland.

This training course is the first intellectual product of the European project Erasmus + KA201 of educational innovation Women’s Legacy, led by the Ministry of Education and whose objective is that the contributions of women in history and culture play a part in the educational content. Thus, the course will be publicly available so that any educational institution can offer it to teachers.

It will be completed with four other intellectual products made by the Women’s Legacy team: a resource bank with activities, indications and information on women and their contributions, together with three catalogues of works and fragments of female authorship in music, literature and art.

All of this will be presented next Friday, May 6th, at Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía, in an act aimed at state-level teachers and representatives of regional, state, and international educational institutions. These intellectual products will also be soon published in digital and free format on the project’s website: www.womenslegacyproject.eu.

Women’s Legacy: European project Erasmus + KA201

The European project Women’s Legacy of educational innovation Erasmus + KA201 began in 2020 with a duration of three years. It is led by the Conselleria d’Educació, Cultura i Esport, and nine Valencian partners, as well as partners from Italy, Lithuania and Scotland, take part in it. This strategic association for the development of educational innovation in Europe is financed with 361,755 euros by the European program Erasmus +.

Among the partners of Women’s Legacy, which is coordinated by the department of Education of the Generalitat (Valencian government), the education services of the Glasgow City Council, the council of the largest city in Scotland; the universities of Valencia and Vilnius; and the IAL Nazionale – Innovazione Apprendimento Lavoro, the largest Italian network of social enterprises working in vocational training and continuous education.

The other five partners of this Eramus+ project are El Legado de las Mujeres, a Spanish association of teachers with the aim of giving visibility to women in Secondary Education content; the Escola Sindical de Formació Melchor Botella, and two secondary schools, the IES Benicalap in Valencia, and the IS Luigi Einaudi in Italy.

The project was born as a European response to the common need to offer didactic intervention instruments that serve to correct the androcentric vision of culture transmitted in education and to recover the hidden European cultural heritage of female authorship, introducing a more complete cultural perspective in educational contents.
