The Women’s Legacy educational innovation project, led by Valencian researcher Ana López-Navajas, has delivered the course “Women’s Legacy: A Science with Women Scientists for the Classroom” to teachers in Monrovia (Liberia). This STEM training is one of the intellectual resources developed by the project team whose goal is not only highlighting women scientists but also transforming and expanding the concept of science while providing tools for incorporating them into secondary education teaching practices.
The STEM training in Monrovia was delivered by Women’s Legacy team members Mari Carmen Sánchez and Martina Delgado, with technical support from Fernando Arroyo. At the national level, the association El Legado de las Mujeres contributed to the project’s development alongside the Women’s Institute. Additionally, the initiative received support from the Ministry of Education of Liberia, led by Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, who also attended the course’s conclusion.
This edition of the course emerged from conversations between project coordinator Ana López-Navajas and Liberia’s Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, during the UNESCO Awards ceremony for Women’s Legacy. The minister expressed great interest in the initiative, which has now materialized in Monrovia, where she brought together teachers from all regions of Liberia.
Many of the participating teachers came from remote areas without internet access. As a result, the training was adapted to accommodate these conditions and make possible the participation of 42 teachers during the three-day event, held from February 12 to 14. “It has been both a challenge and a great achievement,” stated López-Navajas.
According to the Women’s Legacy coordinator: “We trust that this learning experience will have a lasting impact on teaching practices, and we foresee a successful path ahead. The participating teachers expressed their enthusiasm and showed great interest. They explored the resource bank and were amazed by the number of female scientists highlighted within it.”
