Women’s Legacy collaborates in the organization of the Serenates Festival

The Serenates Festival, organized by Universitat de València and the Institut Valencià de Cultura (Valencian Institute of Culture), will be held from June 24th to July 2nd at the Centre Cultural La Nau of Universitat de València. This year marks the 35th edition of the initiative that uses the cloister of the building as the setting for an evening summer festival, which dedicates its programming especially to music composed and performed by Valencian musicians, placing the focus on the younger ones.

Throughout its history, the initiative co-produced by Universitat de València and Institut Valencià de Cultura has been a resounding success and some of the collaborators of this edition are the Diputació de València, Valencia’s City Hall through the Palau de la Música de València, the Banco Sabadell Fund, the Bancaja Fund, Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de València (EASD) and the Women’s Legacy project.

Most of the concerts of the Serenates Festival (#Serenates2022) will be at 10 p.m. in the cloister of La Nau and tickets, at a symbolic price of three euros, can be purchased at http://www.latenda.es/entrades.

The 2022 program will feature ten performances. The festival will open on Friday, June 24th, with the Popular Dancing Group of Universitat de València, which will perform ‘Elionor de Villena’, a production directed by choreographer Toni Aparisi, which deals with the life and work of Villena through the poetics of dance and music to emphasize her figure: her feminist struggle in literature and the Church. They will be accompanied by the Capella de Ministrers Academy.

On Saturday, June 25th, Capella de Ministrers, will be performing ‘El Collar de la Paloma’, a work based on the book by the same name by the Andalusian humanist, poet and writer Ibn Hazm (Córdoba, 994 – Montija, 1064), considered one of the most outstanding works of Arab literature. The group celebrates the 1,000 years of this work with this new performance and concert.

On Sunday, June 26th there will be two performances. At 12.00 p.m., with free admission until full capacity, Tymbals Dipercusión will fill La Nau with music. This project is dedicated to people with impaired mobility and intellectual disabilities to improve their quality of life. In the evening, at 10 p.m., there is a performance by the Orfeó Universitari de València, with a concert to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the group. Orlando Consort, one of the most outstanding vocal groups on the international scene in Renaissance music performance will also participate.

On Monday 27th, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Universitat de València will unravel the sounds of the jazz genre. With the suggestive title ‘Strings&Jazz’, during this concert, the orchestra will share the stage with David Pastor, one of the most prestigious Valencian musicians who has travelled the world developing jazz techniques. The sound of the trumpet will be key throughout the evening and, together with the rhythm of the drums, the depth of the bass and the virtuosity of the piano, will play the most symbolic pieces of this style.

On Tuesday28th, Dómisol Sisters will perform ‘Dancin’ with Dómisol Sisters’, a tribute to the great nights of the dance halls of America in the 30s and 40s. Dómisol Sisters was born in Valencia in 2011 with the intention of recreating, with their own arrangements, the rhythms and melodies of America during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Their performances are characterized by the dynamism and the optimistic and fun energy that transports us to the swing era. Previously, at 7 p.m., in the Sala Matilde Salvador de La Nau, there will be a free lindy hop concert with a capacity of 70 seats, for people who have purchased tickets for the evening performance.

On Wednesday, June 29th, Amalia Tortajada, playing the flute, and Andrea González, playing the guitar, will bring ‘Identidade: Women and Art’ to the Serenates festival. Identidade is an inspiring project in which women of different cultural roots and from various artistic fields come together to collaborate and expose a common project.

The Orchestra of València with the Choir of Generalitat Valenciana will be at La Nau on Thursday, June 30th, to premiere ‘Rapsodia Bocairentina’, conducted by its own author, Jaume Santonja. In addition, the maestro will conduct ‘Marinada, symphonic ballet for soprano and orchestra’, by Vicent Garcés and text by Joan Fuster, specially programmed for the centenary of his birth. The concert, which is of free access and the invitations of which may be withdrawn in the previous 72 hours, will end with the Choir of the Generalitat and the Orchestra of València jointly performing the premiere of the work ‘Terra en la boca’, by Voro Garcia.

‘Forgotten Song’ is the title of the show to be held on Friday, July 1st. A production by Eidos Ensemble, which was created in 2014 with the dual purpose of uniting cultures and vindicating forgotten musical repertoires, paying special attention to compositions written by women from the 18th century to the present day. For 60 minutes, the public will be able to attend interviews, performances and many surprises in the radio programme presented by the radio host Lara Salvador with the live interventions of Eidos Ensemble, which will perform songs by the four protagonists: Pauline Viardot, Maria Malibran, Maria Matilde Alea, and the composer Matilde Salvador.

Finally, the festival will close on July 2nd with Sole Giménez, who will perform ‘Mujeres de Música’ (Women of Music), a project that vindicates the role of the creative women who made their way along the difficult path of music and many others who, years later, took up the baton to expand the room for music made by women. It is a work that includes two albums and a tour with songs from different periods, countries and styles, but with the same common link: that of the creative woman, the female talent, historically reviled and even silenced.

Over the years, within the framework of ‘Serenates’, many works have been premiered or recovered after centuries of oblivion in several Valencian musical archives. In addition, many Valencian groups have made their artistic debut on this stage, which promotes the visibility of young talent. The author of this year’s poster is EASD student Clara Martínez Murillo.
